Backpacking Tips TV: How to Hide Money Whilst Backpacking

This clip demonstrates a way to hide money inside something in your backpack.

Obviously, a big fat permanent marker may draw attention (no pun intended) as it would probably seem an odd thing to be carrying around backpacking, but if adapted slightly – by maybe using something like a non-clear ballpoint pen instead – it has the potential to become a nifty emergency money holder.

If a thief did get into your backpack and went looking for goodies then a crappy pen knocking around in the bottom of your backpack could be easily overlooked in the hunt for money, cards or other valuable items.

Something this small could easily accommodate a tightly rolled $100 bill which would be enough to get by on for a few days should you somehow get parted from your other money and cards.

this is old, im backpacking right now, i have a necklace made of a piece of copper pipe with a rubber bung on either end, it wrapped decorativle in leather and on a leather cord around my neck,
it always has all my notes over 50 euro in it

Thanks for sharing that tip with the rest of us. It’s amazing how many ingenious ways different people tuck things away. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Robert.
    Safe travels

But if they’re going to rob you, chances are they’ll grab your backpack & run. They may not find it, but you’ll still lose it.

Like Robert does, hide it on you, somewhere subtle that doesn’t obviously look like a moneybelt.

Thanks for the comment, Steve – I agree, If you have your backpack on when you get robbed then you’re probably going to lose it. But speaking from my own experience, I probably only have my backpack on about 10 percent of the time. Of course, we’re talking eggs and baskets again here ie wherever possible you split your valuables up – some on you, some in the backpack – so if you get robbed and your backpack is back at your digs then you only lose some stuff, and vice versa: if your backpack gets robbed from your room then you still have things in your possession. Its all about damage limitation.
Talking about getting your backpack pinched from your room – It’s much, much more likely that any theft in your room will be more from ’sticky fingers’ (ie people having a nose in and just pinching money, or electronics or cards) than it will from someone pinching your whole pack. Walking through a guesthouse reception with some stolen money in your pocket is a lot easier than trying to walk out with a bloody great backpack! lol!
Fair enough though, if they do that, you’ve lost everything in (and including) your pack – but this is rare. If you hide money in a few places in your pack (and in your room, come to that) then you have more chance that something will be overlooked – especially if its in something inconspicuous.
You may be interested in the next post also – its about ways to hide money on your person without the use of a money belt – also, if you have any tips to do with this or any other aspect of backpacking/travel, fel free to share them here.
    Thanks

I’m wondering how you get the money out of the pen once you get it in there. Can you dig it out with a ballpoint pen or a key?

For a start, forget those silly idea’s about pouches/money belts and stuff,us girl’s have the perfect answer to this problem!,me and my girl pals put our cash/credit cards/i.d. cards in those plastic bank bags, then, carefully put it down the front of our pantie’s,or bikini pant’s,women’s lycra sports pants are really good for this,”a bit like bikini pant’s”,we always wear loose fitting outer clothing so you can’t tell wear its hidden, thin cotton shorts also hide it well,we keep our stash down there all of the time!,no worries, even the passports go down there too, completly secure and thief-proof,considering we can each have around 300 in notes down there, plus everything else, makes this the perfect place to hide it. “Guy’s get your girlfriends to do this for you”,”you wont be sorry”,!!! I’m sure they won’t mind!.

Yeah that’s definately the safest way. I was pickpocketed once and all of my cash was taken, since then me and my friends always keep our cash/i.d/credit card’s in small plastic ziplock bags down the front of our underwear so it’s safe .women are always seen as an easy target so this is a great way to out fox would-be thieve’s and light fingered larry’s!We all wear bikini’s under our clothing most of the time for comfort,so our cash package easily goes down the front of the pant’s,the stretchy lycra material accomodates it nice and comfy and safe!, (NO PROBLEM!).P.S our boyfriends wear speedo swimming trunk’s under thier shorts and jeans and keep thier cash package down the front of them like we do! Wee’ve all had so much success with this we even keep our cash’n stuff down their back home in everyday life, only if it’s a large amount of money thouhg, after all you can still be pickpocketed or mugged at home as you can abroad!! (TRY IT!)!! GOOD LUCK!!!!!

  8. lucy says:

Yeah!, your undie’s is definately the best way to hide cash’n stuff,my friends and i do the same,we use those plastic bank bag things as well, we keep it down there all the time, nice and secure! one girl even keeps her car keys down there! even with a slight bulge showing no one’s ever noticed or commented. “NO WORRIES”!!

  9. heather says:

been in my late thirties i know all too well of the dangers for women of muggers/pickpockets on holiday.so i also carry cash and valuables down the front of my underwear at all times,i mostly wear lycra sports pants ,(like bikini’s),these are ideal for this as they keep cash firmly and safely against your lower stomach.underneath a skirt or shorts it’s well concealed and comfortable,it’s hardly even notice-able wearing jeans either!,so there’s no worries.it’s certainly the best way for women keep their valuables safe on holiday, and even back home!!!

  10. linda says:

when i want to keep my money safe i fold it up and put it directly inside my bra cup. no safer way and convient.i just avoid wearing tight fitting tank tops. sometimes the simple way is best.

  11. norturk says:

thanks for tips but the best is go and find it out your self, enjoy the backpacking and you will find where will you hide your money yourself.

  12. Luby lu says:

How on earth do you walk around with plastic (money bags/credit cards) in your knickers? Let alone passports too…how big are your knickers? And does it not get a little…hot? Great if it works for you girls, just a little shocked/puzzled :P

  13. keeley54 says:

dear luby lu, no offence, but you’ve obviously never tried this! well you really should cos take it from me and my friends(girls) it’s a winner! as for the size of our knickers, well there just ordinary ones! ( not granny ones or thongs, just nice comfy sensible knickers, also womens lycra sports pants are really good, bikini pants too,but nothing skimpy! after all it’s not a fashion parade,it’s all about keeping you’re money and valuables safe and concealed on your person so you have complete peace of mind, thus you can then enjoy your holiday, worry free! know what i mean! seriously though as explained by other girls on this site, it certainly does work!! the simple ideas (like this) are always the best! don’t wear too tight a fitting outer clothing though, skirts are best, they very nicely hide the slight bulge the money package makes in your undies! and it’s definately not a problem, not at all!!!! (need to access it simply go the toilet,(nice and private). please try it i’d love to hear from you! good luck!!! KEELEY x
