I just came back from backpacking through Australia and the flight there was so expensive that I had virtually no cash to spend on traveling once I got there. Very stressful, but I wound up having the most amazing time and I'm not broke (which is a miracle!)
They have these tourism companies (I used Traveller's Contact Point- and it was really good) that find you a job and an apartment and you can stay in one place for a bit and make money and then they'll book your tours for you all expenses included so you stay on your budget! and then you come back and do the same thing again. It's way cool! If you're looking for low budget traveling I really recommend using one of these companies. and they're really nice!

Generally speaking, travelling alone is the best chance to get in contact with other people. Of course there is a risk, but if you are able to judge other people, the risk is very low.

Ive found that super glue and hockey tape does wonders... It resists sweat and water the tackyness lasts for a lot longer than other tapes... I work prodominantly in the kitchen and have cut fingers more than once, but reg bandaids fall off under gloves and getting all sweaty.. I clean the cut, use some super glue to seal it, and tape it right up... lasts a few days..

These showers really are a b*stard, had the pleasure of being electrocuted in Brazil quite a number of times, I think they use a fillament or something to heat the water rapidly rather than a boiler. Keeps you on your toes anyway.

You could also consider clinically proven Bimuno. In a large, double blind, placebo-controlled study involving people visiting at risk destinations for travellers' diarrhoea, 8 out of 10 had a diarrhoea free holiday. Those that did get Travellers' diarrhoea, the duration of the diarrhoea was halved to 2.4 days compared to 4.6 days experienced on placebo (inactive product used for comparison). The painful spasms associated with TD were also halved compared to placebo. Check it out European Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2009), 1-7.
