BTW, nobody in their right mind would ever suggest that a Swiss Army Knife is a proper substitute for dedicated tools. If you've got a regular screwdriver, by all means, use it. But if all you've got handy is a SAK, it actually come in quite handy.

Just because YOU have never used anything beyond the blade on a SAK does not mean that the other tools are useless.

The bottle opener? It's also a screwdriver. Never tightened/loosened a screw in your life? As an electrician? You must be a heck of an electrician then. Please stay far, far away from the wiring in my house. Oh yeah, it's also a wire stripper.

The can opener? Yup, another screwdriver.

The file on the Classic? You guessed it--screwdriver. The nail files on most Swiss Army Knives make good nail cleaners. Never cleaned the gunk from under your nails? Do NOT try to shake my hand. EVER. Never gotten gunk under your nails? Don't try to tell me you were an electrician again. Hmm.

Wood saw? Believe it or not some of us live in places that have trees and shrubs and some of them even have branches that can be pruned with a small saw.

Corkscrew? Many people have reported that it comes in handy for untangling knotted shoelaces/other cordage.

Scissors? Excellent for snipping loose threads or trimming nails (an adult biting his/her fingernails is a disgusting sight). They even work on paper.

Tweezers? Good for splinters, yes, and some people actually get those sometimes. Also good for personal grooming (and yes, guys need to do this too, sometimes) when you don't have proper tweezers. How many men are hot for women with bushy unibrows?

Toothpick? I never use it as a toothpick. I generally use it to remove lint from the crevices of my pocket knives, which include a fiddly Spyderco Delica lockback. If that knife gets a little bit of lint in the part of the blade that engages the lock, guess what? No locky.

Magnifying glass? I don't have a knife with one of those, but if I did the LAST thing I'd use it for is destryong nature. If that's all you can think of stay far, far away from ME.

Horses' hooves? If you don't have a horse but you buy the Equestrian model anyway, whose fault is that?

Hey, some models even have a parcel/multi-use hook. As most people don't receive packages tied with twine anymore, most people use them to tighten boot laces or remove hot pots from cooking fires while camping. I'd bet there are other uses for it, but I'm not going to come up with more for you. We'll make that your homework, hmm?

I don't prepare food with my pocket knives if I can help it.

If you can't think of ways to use the other tools on a Swiss Army Knife I'd have to say the problem lies with your imagination, not with the tools' utility or your perceived lack thereof.

Just my perspective.

I use the little screw driver every time I change a battery in my watch (several times.
I use the can opener heaps. Works great.
The cork screw is a life saver when I'm desperate to get that bottle open and no one brought a fancy cork screw.
The scissors get used all the time. Very sharp and fine.
The pen and tweezers were used all the time until lost.
It's only a pretty basic model but 50% of tools get used all the time.
But of course the knife gets used every day for apples.

I have never used the pin, saw, awl, or hook disgorge.

As a Swiss man, this whole knife fetish is a national pasttime :). Unfortunately I am quite inclined to agree with you, most of the army knives are BS and you're never going to use any of it (besides the blade that is). I own about 5. I use only one, and that is the "Offiziersmesser" they give you in the actual swiss army, it's sold under the name "soldier". It's pretty much just a blade, a aluminium shell (not those rickety plastic ones), a wirestripper (for laying blasting lines and preparing explosives), a bottleopener and that's it. Very satisfied with it, use it a lot (also when not on the road).

The one thing I really use often in the great outdoors is my multitool, which has good pair of pliers and wirecutters.

One Swiss Army Knife 1965 to 2010, Vietnam and back and everywhere else. If you think a knife is just a knife and not a dependable companion perhaps you have never been truly homesick, alone or frightened.
