skyscanner

Can I get to Manila from Kota Kinabalu on thursday? If so, who flies there..?

Skyscanner.net is awesome for finding what flies where, when, and for how much. Skyscanner has an interactive route map much like the large airline carrier websites, yet is far superior in our opinion. Why? It displays routes for a whole heap of airlines, not just the one.

Very Flash

Simply click the dot where you want to start and before you know it the map becomes littered with dots denoting where you can go from that place. Inversely, click where you want to end up, and the new dots will then show where you can get there from. It's a beautiful, beautiful thing - especially for the uber-flexible vague-abonds among us.

Old Skool, too

If for some reason you don't do maps and flash and such things (or your internet cafe doesn't) then you can get the same result with the drop down menus, too. It's brill.

One Drawback

Although we love the site, brilliant is never enough around here. Despite it being user friendly, well laid out, and quick and simple to navigate and pick up, we just wish that it searched even more airlines 'in house' without the user getting farmed out to other cheap flight sites from time to time. Thankfully this only happens when you want to fly between two destinations generally only covered by the larger airlines such as BA and Continental etc., as skyscanner covers all the budget airlines that I could care to mention.

What we need is a sister site that functions in much the same way yet covers the airlines that sites such as Cheaptickets.com and Opodo.com deal with. Maybe its already out there but still under the radar? Watch this space.

Anyhow, back to the good points.

Good just got better

Ok, how sick are you of search engines with the max  +/- 3 day flexibility on flight dates? For those lucky souls with more than +/- 3 day flexiblity, skyscanner comes into it's own.  You can search for the best price on flights over a whole year (seriously) and have the results broken down month by month.

Oh, and did I mention that the subsequent report of all those prices for each month - high and low - can be viewed in graph form for each day covered?

Really, check it out, its the daddy.

Top Tips for Cheaper Airline Tickets

1. Be Flexible - If possible, avoid peak times such as holiday seasons, weekends and even 'convenient' flight schedules. Off season, midweek flights and those at ungodly hours will invariably be cheaper.
2. Search High and Low - Search numerous online travel agents and aggregator sites as deals can vary immensly from one search engine to the next.
3. Double Check - Once you have found the best deal from the flight search engines, check for that specific flight elsewhere online. Google it.
4. Go Direct - Check deals directly from the airlines.
5. Plan Ahead - Search the optimum flight window:- 3 to 16 weeks before you plan to fly.
