What are hostels?

So, what is a hostel?

These days the term hostel can mean many things, but essentially hostels are places that offer cheap and safe lodging for travelers on a budget. They are the accommodation equivalent of a ‘no frills’ airline.

Hostels are usually community orientated and a great place to meet like minded people.

Standards vary, as do prices, but generally a hostel will usually be cheaper than other forms of accommodation in the same area. Nowadays, more hostels are taking on the form of budget guesthouses and as a result have attracted folk from a much broader spectrum than one would first imagine.

Although they will almost certainly still retain their dormitories, shared bathrooms and communal areas including a TV area and kitchen, more and more hostels are starting to offer private rooms and bathrooms at a slightly higher price.

Top Tip: How to find great hostels/guesthouses without the legwork.

One option is to browse hostels/guesthouse online before you arrive. Online booking sites provide a wealth of information such as up to date photos, prices, locations (normally with maps), past user reviews and ratings, and lists of facilities within each place. But don't just take our word for it, see for yourself!

Best of all, these sites are free to use and come with no obligation to book accommodation once you've made a shortlist.

However, if you're planning to rock up late or during busy periods such as festivals or national holidays and still want to get a good deal, booking ahead can be more convenient and sometimes necessary.
